Senior Operations Manager

About the Job

MetroLab Network is a non-profit organization in Washington DC driving positive change to communities by way of supporting partnerships between local governments and universities. We believe building an ecosystem that combines research with doers brings tremendous impact. As MetroLab grows over the next 1-3 years, we seek a leader within the organization to focus on strategy and effectiveness.

The Senior Operations Manager is a critical role that oversees MetroLab’s administration, human resources management, and operational duties. This position reports directly to the Executive Director.

  • Lead the organization on financial planning, budgeting, cash flow, investment priorities, and policy matters – including managing staff and consultants.
  • Serve as the management liaison to the board and finance and audit committees; effectively communicate and present critical financial matters at select board of directors and committee meetings.
  • Maintain continuous lines of communication, keeping the Executive Director informed of all critical issues.
  • Strategic planning for organizational growth, particularly considering internal “infrastructure” and processes (i.e. accounting needs, office space and work policies)
  • Following all rules and regulations pertaining to donations, including providing written disclosures to the donor.
  • Leading compliance efforts to grant expenditures, monitoring and reporting for the organization. The Operations Director works closely with Program Staff to make sure the organization complies with reporting requirements to granting agencies.
  • Reviewing and evaluating business procedures and ensuring that personnel across the organization are following them.
  • Working directly with the Accountant and Tax Accountant on recordkeeping, financial reporting, and all forms of regulatory and tax compliance.
  • Oversee efforts to create a healthy organizational culture, including providing input into total rewards, benefits programs, and recognition.
  • Serving as the point of contact with vendors and suppliers. The Senior Operations Manager processes invoices for payment, including writing checks or paying bills online, providing checks to the Executive Director for signature, and providing documentation of all payments to the Accountant for entry into the accounting system.
  • Leading compliance with all necessary business licenses and reporting.
  • MetroLab is a team of dedicated professionals who support the organization and the impact we strive to see. This role, and all roles across the organization, work collaboratively every day. “All hands on deck” is often required for programming or deliverables outside of typical duties. This role will likely support MetroLab convenings, logistics, and membership programming as needed.

  • Undergraduate or masters degree in the areas of business, management, law, or economics preferred but not required.
  • 5+ years of nonprofit management experience, preferably with experience in a national organization.
  • Experience with nonprofit finance, compliance and accounting.
  • Excellent people and communication skills, leaning into individual strengths and abilities.
  • Demonstrated expertise in managing organizational financial activity and systems, including budgeting, multi-year forecasting, modeling, accounting, and reporting in a diverse stakeholder and funding environment.
  • Ability to analyze and recommend short-term and long-term improvements to processes, procedures, and systems.
  • Entrepreneurial team player who can manage multiple projects.
  • Superior management skills and innovative problem solver.
  • Exceptional written, oral, interpersonal, and presentation skills and the ability to effectively interface with senior management and the board of directors.
